Watercolor and gouache on board, titled "Wet Evidence", a Saturday Evening Post story illustration. Signed in lower right. Robert W. Douglass (1918-1980) was an American artist and illustrator. Some of his paintings were scenes of American life similar to those of Norman Rockwell (like his "First Born", showing a father awaiting the birth of a child). Others were similarly realistic, but with darker themes, like the piece offered here or his "Hunter's Moon," another Saturday Evening Post story illustration. From the estate of Charles Martignette (1950-2008), a noted authority on American illustrative art whose collection merited a special exhibit at the Smithsonian. Multiple nail holes at edges.
